A police chase down country roads in northern Nebraska ended with a splash into a sandpit.

The Nebraska State Patrol says the chase began Wednesday morning when a Brown County deputy tried to stop a car on U.S. Highway 20
east of Ainsworth.

A trooper joined the chase on a county road three miles east of town. The car eventually turned into a pasture, rammed through fences and disappeared over a rise.

The trooper saw a huge splash of water. When he reached the crest, the trooper saw the car floating in a water-filled sandpit. Two people were swimming toward the bank.

The 20-year-old driver was arrested. His passenger was taken to a hospital for treatment, then released.

The patrol is investigating a report the car was stolen in Fargo, N.D.
