International Driver's Permit Scam

In 17 years wearing a badge lavista officer Harald Rappold asked drivers for the same information but a recent traffic stop wasn’t routine.

Officer Rappold says, “I asked for license registration and insurance and he hands me an International Drivers Document.”

Those provide extra documentation for travelers driving in foreign countries but are only good with a valid driver’s license. Some immigrants are being told the international drivers permit is all they need and some that they buy are phony at that.

LaVista Chief Bob Lausten says, “It’s a phony document and if there are people out there buying these they need to know this doesn’t allow them to drive in Nebraska.”

Both the Mexican Consulate and Omaha’s Latino Center have issued warnings about buying international driver’s permits from stores or on the street.

The wife of the driver stopped tells Six On Your Side that her husband paid $150 for an International Drivers License at a south Omaha business.

She says police officers in another city didn’t question the license during a traffic stop. But in LaVista officer Rappold spotted red flags indicating the permit is a fake.

The driver, who had valid registration and insurance, was ticketed for no operator’s license.
