There are i-Tunes "apps" available for almost every need or want, from finding directions, to logging onto Facebook, and even counting calories. Of course there are plenty of games, too. One of the top sellers right now has local ties, and the creator has more up his sleeve.
The walls of Sky Vu studios in Omaha are filled with creativity. Benjamin Vu is the CEO and has been drawing all his life. "Our dad always brought home reams of paper from working at Mutual of Omaha for us to just draw on the table, that's all we did, my brother and I."
His pride at the moment is "Battle Bears." "It combines a little bit of cute and cuddly, with a little bit of violence and fun and action, and the response has been great," said Vu.
Sky Vu Pictures has five artists who work on Battle Bears from the early sketches, all the way to the 3-D video game product.
"The game went on sale on i-Tunes August 31, and it has sky-rocketed up to number three of all paid apps in just 14 days." So far they've sold more than a half a million downloads.
"It was shocking, and we are very happy at it's success, and we are happy that there are other people out there who enjoy that blend of comedy and action and a little bit of violence like we do," said Vu.
Players aim to shoot pink teddy bears who are trying to hug the character to death. Once the bears are hit, colored stuffing comes out.
"I think the concept works, the icon is really catchy and people tend to think it's exciting," said Vu. "They see that little bear in the icon and they wonder what's up with Battle Bears?"
Vu is also working on a "Battle Bears" movie, but is waiting for funding. "Being the first film based off an i-Phone app is pretty exciting."
For the moment, Vu is reveling in his high spot, on i-Tunes.
There is a free app available on i-Tunes or a longer version for 99 cents. For more information go to battlebears.com.
