The city of Schuyler, Nebraska has agreed to pay $150,000 to an assault victim who was accidentally shot by a police officer.

Dielman Fuentes was shot when police responded to a report of a fight outside a Schuyler home on May 21, 2007. Officer Carl Heidemann was trying to arrest a suspect when his gun discharged, hitting Fuentes in the arm and shoulder.

Police later determined that Fuentes had been the victim of a beating. Fuentes suffered nerve damage that affected his grip strength and lost his job. He filed a $450,000 claim with the city in January 2008.

His attorney, Maren Chaloupka, said Saturday that the city has agreed to a settlement.
