Smoking ban may extend to outdoors too.
The Cassgram reprots that Cass County Commissioners voted unanimously to order a resolution drawn up that says no smoking is allowed anywhere on county property. That would include the courthouse and law enforcement center grounds. The city sidewalks around the courthouse would not be affected.
The county declared all its buildings and vehicles tobacco free several months ago.
Commissioner John Baroni said the new policy wouldn’t be any different than what is in place at the federal building grounds in Omaha. As to the county employees that smoke, “We provide health insurance,” he said, “This can help them be healthy.”
Board Chairman Ron Nolte said he knows it presents some enforcement questions and “will rub some taxpayers the wrong way,” but the health concerns “are the most important thing.”
The resolution is expected to come up for a vote at the next meeting September 15th.
