New Treasurer Appointed

Ron Ross, director of the state Health and Human Services System, was named Wednesday to succeed Lorelee Byrd as State Treasurer.

Byrd, who is resigning next month, has pleaded guilty to misconduct in office.

Ross was appointed by Gov. Mike Johanns.

"His honesty and integrity are a key part to all of this," Johanns said.

He will fill out the remaining three years of Byrd's term and then be eligible to run for election to the office.

Byrd was sentenced Tuesday to 300 hours of community service following an investigation of financial irregularities in her office.

Byrd pleaded guilty to the charge of official misconduct last month.

Byrd announced her resignation, effective Jan. 6, earlier this month.
