The Plattsmouth City Council ordered placement of two sales tax propositions on mail-in ballots November 15th.
The Cassgram If passed, Proposition #1 would increase the city sales and uses tax from 1% to 1.5%. The additional .5% would be “used for sidewalk and street improvements and maintenance,” according to the proposition draft.
(The other 1% would continue to be evenly split between real property tax relief and economic development as it has been for the last several years.)
If passed, Proposition #2 would “remove the limitation on the duration of the city’s sales and uses tax…”
Councilwoman Ruth Wassinger started discussion by saying it’s important to give the issue to the voters, “It’s necessary to put this on the ballot.”
Councilman Rod Jenkins was the only vote against the motion. He was concerned that the Downtown Streetscape is not specified as the use for the additional .5%. “That’s been the whole purpose all along… that should be mentioned” on the ballot, he said.
