Volunteers across the metro helped stuff nearly 5,000 grocery bags of donated food into trucks to help the needy over the weekend.
Mission For All Nations partnered with Hy-Vee as all 11 of its metro supermarkets had special sacks for sale to provide the food. Those sacks will help meet the huge demand for food during the upcoming months.
"This fall and this winter we will serve three-to-four thousand people every month,” said Mary Anaya of Mission For All Nations. The charity has seen a 75 percent increase in clients this year.
"People come to us because they are in a crisis and there are a lot of families right now that are in a crisis and a week's supply of groceries can really make the difference and it's wonderful to get to see people experience hope again," said Anaya.
This was the third year for the Stuff A Truck campaign and though donations weren't quite as high as last year, it was still significant.
“Probably Thanksgiving time we will serve five-to-six thousand that month," said Anaya. "We distribute over 10 tons of food each week. The food that we're receiving here during Stuff A Truck Hy-Vee Drive is critically important to us."
Council Bluffs Hy-Vee stores also collected food to help the Micah House.
