The University of Iowa is ticketing smokers who light up on campus.

University President Sally Mason told the Iowa Board of Regents on Wednesday in Cedar Falls that officials are cracking down on smokers following complaints about smoking near University Hospitals.

Mason says most of the violators are visitors.

Campus police are ticketing those who refuse to put out their cigarettes after they've been caught. Fines are $50.

Smoking is illegal at the university and other college campuses as part of a statewide smoking ban that took effect last year.
