A move is under way to ban bicyclists on county roads in Iowa. A group called Citizens for Safety Coalition of Iowa is circulating a petition and urging the Legislature to support a move to ban bikes on so-called farm-to market roads.
Spokesman Dan Jones says too many people are getting hurt in accidents.
Iowa has over 30,000 miles of farm-to-market roads, which includes paved county road and heavily traveled gravel roads.
Mark Wyatt of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition says banning bikes isn't the answer to safety concerns, but rather education and awareness, better engineered roads and enforcement of traffic laws.
Crawford County banned an annual summer bike ride across Iowa in 2007 in the wake of a lawsuit over the death of a rider in 2004.
