Five golf carts stolen from a nine hole course near Fremont have been recovered.
The Saunders County Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz says the thieves took them into the deep rough.
The sheriff says, “They kind of had their own demolition derby.”
The carts stolen from Whitetail Run Course south of Fremont are useless. The damage estimate is $15,000. Course owner Brad Novak says, “It would be one thing if they stole them to sell them. But obviously they were stolen to destroy them.
Thieves loaded them into a pick up one cart at a time and took the carts about three miles away to a wooded area. There the carts were hot wired. It appears the suspects used the carts like bumper cars smashing into trees and themselves plus running through mud like an off road vehicle.
Until he gets an insurance settlement Novak purchased five used carts and added a security camera system to his course.
The sheriff says two 19 year old men have been arrested but warrants may soon be issued for at least three more.
