Permits are available for people who want to harvest hay from alongside state highways near their land.

Until July 30, those landowners will have first crack at harvesting the rights of way. After July 30, anyone may apply for the $40 permits.

Applicants must prove they have $1 million in liability insurance.

Interstate and freeway rights of way are not included in the program.

The permits may be obtained from Nebraska Department of Roads area maintenance offices.
