Police are looking for two people responsible for a hit-and-run accident that left an Omaha man dead Saturday night.

Officers were called to the intersection of 37th and Y streets where two cars had collided after one ran a stop sign just before 7 p.m. Both vehicles came to rest in a yard.

The passenger in the car that was hit, 29-year old Steven "Mike" McAdams, was killed. The driver, 30-year-old David Hardin of Omaha, was treated for injuries at Creighton University Medical Center. They were going to buy some more fireworks.

McAdams and his 10-year-old son Mikey were extremely close. Mike's mother and Mikey's grandmother says they were like two peas in a pod, but it's time not spent together on the Fourth of July that may have spared Mikey's life.

"His son wanted to come, but he told him no and basically we drove, got to 37th and Y and the white car came out of nowhere about 50 or 60 miles an hour and slammed into the side of my car," said Hardin.

Two males in their late teens or early twenties in the car that ran the stop sign fled from the scene on foot. Hardin tried to chase after them, but his injuries were too severe and he collapsed in the street.

Sunday, iced and medicated, Hardin was still in a great deal of pain made worse by the loss of his lifelong friend. "Without him I don't know because I've never been without him, I don't know what it's going to be like. I was crying all night last night over it I was just lying in this bed in shock, crying."

Everyone who heard the news had the same reaction. McAdams' father and mother are still coming to grips with their loss. Right now people are concentrating on Mike. He and his father shared such a close relationship they know that Mikey is struggling, though confident he'll pull through.

"I hope so, I sure hope so," said Hardin. "He's a good kid. Yeah, I think he'll bounce back." But now he'll have to do it without his father by his side.

McAdams' parents, Mike and Judy, said they want to get these guys off the streets because they feel no one is safe. For now, the McAdams are trying to figure out a way to pay for a funeral and give Mikey a secure future.

Hardin's medical bills are piling up and he was supposed to start a job on Monday. Doctors say he may be off work for three months.

Anyone with information about the accident or the whereabouts of the two suspects is asked to call police at 444-5627.
