State Treasurer Shane Osborn and staff in his office's Unclaimed Property Division went door-knocking in Omaha in an attempt to give back $350,000 in unclaimed money.
Osborn said he decided to go door-to-door on Wednesday because of success he had last year with the program.
He said he and his staff were able to return a substantial amount of money and "it was such a pleasure to surprise people at their door with a check in my hand."
The average unclaimed-property check is more than $900.
Under state law, the state treasurer is responsible for handling unclaimed property.
Examples include health claim payments, dividends, utility deposits, life insurance proceeds, wages, stocks, outstanding checks and unused gift certificates.
