A national pizza chain rolled into Omaha Wednesday to help the city's homeless and needy. The Little Caesars' Love Kitchen was at the Open Door Mission feeding more than 300 people over the noon hour.
Many of those served were children living at the mission or participating in the center's summer camp program. Area homeless were also served.
More than 90 pizzas were churned out by the company's mobile pizza oven. The Love Kitchen is based out of Detroit and travels to where people are in need of help.
"It goes to 48 states and Canada feeding the homeless and hungry and also we're at national disasters like (hurricanes) Rita and Katrina and recently was up in North Dakota in the summer time for the flooding up there," said Little Caesars' Doug Ruthvan.
"This is one way Little Caesars gives back to the community."
While mainly serving at national disaster sites, the need on the local level is growing. “Definitely, the numbers are up at the local soup kitchens,” said Ruthvan.
The Love Kitchen has been recognized by former presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush and the Reagan administration for its volunteer service.
More than 60,000 employees have donated their time for the Love Kitchen program. More than two million people have been served by the Love Kitchen since 1995.
