Kearney leaders may allow liquor sales on Sunday to help city businesses better compete with shops just outside of town that do sell booze on Sundays.

The Kearney City Council will consider making that change at its meeting Tuesday night.

Kearney Mayor Stan Clouse says the current rules put owners of the city's convenience and liquor stores at a competitive disadvantage.

Clouse says the Council needs to decide whether the community wants the change.

Officials with Project Extra Mile, an organization that fights underage drinking, oppose the change.

The group's executive director, Diane Riibe, says the City Council should consider the public-health consequences of expanded drinking, not just the business case for it.
