If federal aviation officials don't object, McCook Regional Airport will be renamed McCook Ben Nelson Regional Airport.
The City Council voted 3-1 Monday night to honor Nebraska's senior U.S. senator by adding his name to the airport signs.
Councilman Aaron Kircher voted against the idea, saying didn't want to risk any airport funding or otherwise make it harder for Nelson to support the airport.
Nelson, a Democrat, is a native of McCook.
He was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000 and re-elected in 2006. Before that Nelson served as Nebraska's governor from 1991 to 1999.
Said McCook resident Steve Batty: "He's a hometown boy who has done right by us."
