The Nebraska State Patrol has identified the five people killed in a Sunday afternoon crash on Interstate-80 near Shelton. Two of the victims were from Utah and three were from Denver.

Those killed are identified as 34-year-old Rafael Castro Recendez, and Ortensia Julio of West Valley, Utah and 32-year-old Maria Avalos, three-year-old Alexandro Ulloa and two-month-old Avan Ulloa, all of Denver, Colorado.

The crash happened around 3 p.m.

All five of those killed were riding in a westbound, Ford F150 pick-up truck. A front seat passenger in the pick-up, 35-year-old Vincent Ulloa of Denver was injured in the crash. He was transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Kearney where he underwent surgery for his injuries.

Troopers investigating the crash say the driver of the Ford pick-up lost control of the vehicle just west of the Shelton overpass on I-80. The truck crossed the median, where it clipped the left rear of a car headed eastbound. The pick-up was then struck nearly head-on by an eastbound Dodge pick-up.

Two people in the car were not injured. The driver of the Dodge, 48-year-old Kenneth Husted of Lincoln and his 13-year-old son Ross Husted, were injured in the crash. Both were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney with multiple fractures.

Freezing drizzle was being reported in the area at the time and may have been a contributing factor in the crash.
