Very Few Iowans Want FEMA Trailers

Officials say only 65 Iowans so far have expressed an interest in buying the FEMA trailers they've been living in since last year's floods.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency brought 564 mobile homes to eastern Iowa. FEMA spokeswoman Crystal Payton says 298 are still in use.

The bulk are in Linn County, with others in Black Hawk and Louisa counties and a handful of homes in other communities.

FEMA has told Iowans still living in the trailers that they can buy the units at fair market value -- $12,000 to $17,000.

Interested residents have until next week to send a letter to FEMA.

FEMA benefits by selling the trailers because the agency won't have to move them. Iowans who don't buy the mobile homes must move out by Nov. 27.
