Papillion's Sumtur Amphitheater is kicking off its second season of concerts and shows, including a free music concert series on Thursday nights in June.
The land which used to be an empty field near 108th and Highway 370, is filling up.
"It's a perfect evening, perfect venue, good band, so it's a great night," said Greg Nestroyl of Omaha. He came to the amphitheater to see the band, 112 North Duck, a local blues group.
The Sumtur Amphitheater is showing off some new additions from last year. There is a new fence around the perimeter, added security, and permanent seating, enough for 350 people. Still, the grassy hill is a popular spot for families to bring chairs or a blanket, and watch the show.
"Nebraska Department of Economic Development saw this as a tourist type attraction, and so it's really going to be," said Papillion mayor, James Blinn. "We get a good number of people turning through here."
The amphitheater is just a few miles from where, it's hoped, the new Sarpy County stadium will sit. The new developments for the area could create quite a boom for the local economy.
"I just think that it's a boon for the area," said Mary Miller of Omaha. "I like to see new things, for the shopping center, for the whole, all the way out to where we are. It's just grown and developed, and it's clean."
The amphitheater is partially funded by private donations, a state grant, and the city of Papillion.
Gene Mahoney and his wife have lived in Papillion for a little more than a year. They moved from the Rosenblatt area and could soon be neighbors to another ballpark. "There's no end in sight with what's going to happen here. I mean, we're extremely happy living here."
With events like the free concert series, it's easy to see why.
"It's free. That's my favorite four-letter word, but it's good, I think there's no where to go but up for Papillion," said Mahoney.
