Chief of the Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire Department Mike Wilson caught many by surprise when he turned in his resignation as fire chief during Monday night’s Plattsmouth City Council session.
The Cassgram Wednesday, Bill Dudek, who had been first assistant chief, confirmed that the fire department is operating with him as acting chief after the Tuesday night department meeting. Dudek does not carry the chief’s "801" radio designation at this time but would assume that identification if a fire department vote on July 7th elects him as chief and he clears the necessary city channels.
The 36-year-old Wilson first joined the rescue department in 1994. He had been fire chief for the past 4½ years and assistant chief for 6 years before that. All total, he has held an officer’s position in the fire and rescue departments for 13 years. Wilson will continue to serve on both departments.
Wilson declined comment on the specifics that spurred his decision but said it was time for him to step away from the demands of the chief’s position.
