Iowa May Extend Current License Plates

As Nebraska gets ready for a license plate makeover, Iowa is considering keeping its current look awhile longer.

Instead of issuing new tags, which would cost taxpayers $11 million, officials are considering extending the life of the current plates by increasing the pool of letter-number combinations.

Mark Lowe of the Iowa Department of Transportation says a decision will likely be made this summer. Iowa's current plates were issued in 1996, but the design process started three years earlier.

Iowa has about 4.1 million licensed vehicles on the road. Lowe says the current system of three numbers and three letters should be good through 2012.

Iowa offers more than four dozen varieties of tags with themes ranging from the military to breast cancer to colleges and universities.
