The Nebraska State Patrol has a new tool it's using on the state's roads and highways -- the Mobile Plate Hunter.
The device uses and infrared camera to scan the license plates of passing cars to get immediate information about the vehicle and its driver. The device can determine whether a vehicle is stolen, if its registration is up-to-date or if the driver is wanted by authorities.
The state currently has only two of the $20,000 scanner -- one being used in Omaha and the other in Lincoln.
The patrol says that as more troopers are trained to use the scanner, the more likely the patrol is to buy more of the devices.
