Crash Victim's Family Speaks Out
The parents of 4-year-old Josie Bluhm, who suffered inoperable head injuries in a Tuesday morning crash, Thursday released a statement to the community. Their daughter died Wednesday after life support was withdrawn.
The statement simply says: "We want to express our heartfelt thanks for the prayers and support from around the community. It means a great deal to us during this very difficult and tragic time."
A minivan carrying 32-year-old Jayme Bluhm and her three children was hit at 180th and West Center Road just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday when the driver of a pickup truck ran a red light.
Jayme Bluhm and her 5-year-old son Cayden are both still in the hospital. Mom is in fair condition. Cayden is still in serious condition. He suffered a number of broken bones in the crash.
One-year-old Reagan suffered cuts and bruises but was released from the hospital late Tuesday.
Funeral services for Josie Bluhm have been scheduled for 10:30 Saturday morning at Lutheran Church of the Master in Elkhorn at the West Campus.
Pastor George Megard says the tragedy has hit home for so many in the community. "We always think it could happen to me and what about my child."
Megard is trying to help the family and their loved ones through this time of grief. "Right now I think it's just numbness. And almost even still in a dream state of disbelief."
He adds, "There's probably no greater loss than losing a child. Losing a spouse, you know, health, losing a child is the worst. And it is just so difficult."
If anything positive can come out of something so horrific, he says it's, "being more careful when we're driving and that yellow doesn't mean accelerate. And also, just the preciousness of life and that we really grasp that, and appreciate those we're close to."
Megard says the best thing we can do for those who lose somebody so tragically, is to just be there for them.
"The Bluhm family have just a lot of family and friends that are surrounding them right now. But I think we have to realize that we can give comfort, but this is a hurt that's going to last."
The Bluhm family has established a charitable fund at Enterprise Bank at 128th & Center. Donations can be made there to help the family with funeral and medical costs.
