A big break in a string of burglaries Channel 6 News reported about last week. The common thread is the victims were attending funerals when someone broke into their homes.
The Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Department is looking for a "person of interest" in connection with a number of recovered stolen items.
A would-be thief apparently tried to strike a home east of Oakland, Iowa April 29th whose residents were away attending a funeral. Someone house-sitting got suspicious and took down the man's license plate number.
Investigators traced it and served a warrant on a home in Council Bluffs last Friday. Inside, authorities found enough stolen items to fill 10 pages, including some from the Jager home near Underwood, Iowa that was burglarized April 20th while they were at a funeral. Family heirlooms, including wedding rings, were among the items taken.
The vehicle spotted in the Oakland area incident matches the description of the one seen in the Underwood robbery.
Investigators are looking for 37-year-old Karl Schmidt, currently wanted on warrants for failure to appear in court. Anyone with information about Schmidt is asked to call (712) 890-2200.
