Omaha Royals Open Season, Stadium Sites Narrow To Three

The Omaha Royals know they will be moving in the near future, but the team--like the rest of us--is still asking where?

The Royals 2009 Home Opener is against the Albuquerque Isotopes Friday night at 7:05 Dick Clark will throw out the first pitch.

The New Year's theme includes a ball drop, champagne, and fireworks.

Even with the festivities, it's the future of this team that's captivating attention.

At Brownie's in Papillion, Jeff Wilch, of Papillion, talks baseball over lunch. He goes to several Omaha Royals games at Rosenblatt each year.

"I don't want the stadium. The stadium we have is very adequate. It's a beautiful facility. We spent millions upgrading it for the NCAA." said Wilch. "It's fine for the Royals. Why would we have to move?"

Just a table away, another baseball fan isn't on Jeff's team.

"Omaha Royals need to stay and if they're not here, they need to go somewhere," said Aaron Grell.

As for the players, they are just focused on winning.

Omaha Royals General Manager, Martie Cordaro says, "Of course, the teams five and three. Coming home from the first road trip-and playing very well as well."

But baseball is business. The field of new stadium sites has been narrowed down from 12 to three. These sites will be presented to the Sarpy County Board on Tuesday.

"Lot's of things going on behind the scenes. Lots of interest for naming rights, partners, suite sponsors, things that we haven't had at Rosenblatt," Cordaro said.

Those three sites will go before the board for approval, and be released to the public next week.

Saturday, Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. for baseball action. Channel 6 is sponsoring the night.

The first 1,500 fans in the gates will get free baseball caps with the teams 1980's logo.
