Ralston Police reported Monday that an expensive Tanzanite necklace stolen last December has been recovered and several arrests have been made.
The necklace, valued at $27,500, was stolen December 7th from a Ralston home while family members were at a wake for the woman who lived in the house. After the theft was discovered, police circulated information as far as Kansas City, Des Moines and Sioux City.
While investigating another burglary, an FBI agent saw the expensive necklace at the Sol's pawn shop at 120th and West Center Road in Omaha.
That discovery set in motion a series of events that ultimately involved Ralston Police, the FBI, the Douglas County Sheriff's Department and Omaha Police, who collectively have solved a number of metro burglaries.
"The FBI initially became involved because one of our employees’ houses was broken into and we wanted to ensure that they were not targeting FBI employees’ houses," says the FBI’s Sandy Breault.
Sol's general manager John Dineen says he was suspicious of the person who pawned the expensive necklace.
"Normally when you have a piece like that, people have paperwork, original appraisals, original receipts where they purchased it to kind of show what they paid for it. When somebody who brings something in like that doesn't know much information about it, it kind of lets us go okay, wait a minute, what's going on here."
Several pieces of stolen jewelry were recovered, including the Tanzanite necklace, which was one of several things taken from the Ralston home. The total loss was more than $50,000. The police say the reason the house was targeted was because it was dark and the thief could tell no one was home.
Sol's is cooperating in the investigation. The owner of the necklace will have to pay Sol's to get it back, which is standard procedure.
Four people were arrested in connection with the string of burglaries. Twenty-four-year-old Brandon Flores was arrested for burglary, Shawna Porter for criminal conspiracy, Herman Polomo for attempted burglary and Loretta Flores for receiving stolen items.
