A day of play turned into a trip to the emergency room for a 16-month-old heartland girl. A dog wandered into her backyard and attacked her. Now the family needs help finding the dog.

Kiersten Geiger was playing on her slide Monday when a dog came wandering through the gate of her backyard.

"And as she started to toddle towards the dog, I leaned over to pick her up and as I was picking her up, the dog jumped up and bit her in the face," said Kiersten's mom Becky Geiger.

Then, Becky says the dog ran back out the gate. It left behind a bite just below Kiersten's eye and a scratch on her face.

"It was kind of scary because I've never seen a dog bite for no reason," Becky said.

But the scariest part for Kiersten was yet to come. She received several shots, including one directly into the bite near her eye.

"A shot at the puncture wound site because of infection, and then they did start the rabies series, so if we don't find the dog she's going to have to have four more rabies shots," Becky said.

In order to stop the shots, the Kiersten's family needs to find the dog and make sure it does not have rabies.

Becky Geiger describes the dog as a small to medium-sized dog that looked like a black rat terrier. She says it was not wearing a collar or tags. The dog bit Kiersten in the neighborhood just off Meadows Parkway and Highway 50 in Sarpy County.

If you have any information about the dog, call the Nebraska Humane Society at 444-7800.
