Instead of a taxpayment the Omaha Public Power District issued a check for $165,934 this week to Cass County.
The money will be distributed to school districts and other local government entities.
The in lieu of tax payments are based on the amount of retail sales of electricity within incorporated cities and villages in OPPD’s territory, says OPPD.
The payments take the place of property taxes and some other taxes. OPPD does pay general sales taxes, gasoline taxes, wheel taxes, motor vehicle license fees, and permit fees, like most other businesses.
The total payments over the eleven county area totaled $21.3 million, an increase of about $1 million from the previous year.
