A man goes on a wild driving spree Tuesday night and police have determined he crashed into cars on purpose. We are learning even more about the man behind the wheel. Tuesday night's incident that happened over a 7-mile stretch of L street was hardly the first involving Leland Nordstrom.
One of those incidents involved Pat Barnes. "The truck was parked right here where I usually park, I ran inside this door right here to check one of the batteries in the trucks," describes Barnes.
When Barnes came back out of the Ft. Calhoun Fire Department about 20 minutes later on February first, his truck was gone. The man later arrested was 62-year old Leland Nordstrom.
Barnes says, "he was arrested in Omaha for felony possession. He was charged. He was set for a court date, but apparently he missed his court date and was arrested again through a warrant and bonded out from that."
The charge was a class 3 felony. Nordstrom bonded out and never showed up for that March fourth court date. And it wasn't Nordstrom's first arrest of the year. Two days before he stole Pat Barnes' pick-up truck, Council Bluffs police arrested Nordstrom on January 30th on 16-th street where he was causing a disturbance. Nordstrom told the officers he didn't have any money and had just gotten out of jail for a trespassing arrest at Harrah's Casino. When officers tried to take Nordstrom to a shelter, he became violent during a pat down - yelling, cursing and then pushing the officer. He was arrested for disorderly conduct and serious assault on an officer. Nordstrom later bonded out.
Barnes says, "I don't think it should have gotten to this point. He's been in trouble with the law since January and either with the court system or the bond system themselves. They just keep bonding him out and there should have been a red flag somewhere."
After Barnes saw the destruction caused by Nordstrom Tuesday, he could only wonder why Nordstrom was still a free man then.
"It just, it kind of made me sick to my stomach knowing that he could've killed somebody and this should've been taken care of a long time ago," says Barnes.
The Washington County Attorney tells Channel 6 News no charges will be filed there against Leland Nordstrom for stealing the truck. She says for privacy reasons, she cannot say why. As for Tuesday's crash spree in Omaha, Nordstrom faces three counts of felony assault and for using his car as a weapon.
