Not So Happy Trails

Cass County Commssioners took another vote on the MoPac Trail route Tuesday, a vote that District 4 Commissioner Dave Nielsen said was needed to make the county’s position very clear to the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District.

Nielsen, who, as a LPSNRD Board of Directors member voted against the route running along 334th Street north from Wabash to East Park Highway, said the County Board’s previous action didn’t get the full point across to the NRD. The motion passed March 3rd said the county would not allow use of county right-of-way for the bike trail. It passed unanimously.

Nielsen had written out the motion he offered this week: "I’ll make a motion to reject the trail proposal as presented to the board (at the 3/3/09 meeting). Also, we do not support eminent domain for recreation."

"I think they’ll understand that," said Nielsen.

District 1 Commissioner John Baroni wondered if any further county board action was even necessary, but Nielsen assured him it was needed. "It’s become a political football," commented Baroni. Nielsen concurred.

All four commissioners present at Tuesday’s meeting voted for Nielsen’s motion.

Landowners along and near the route voiced their opposition to the route at NRD meetings and some have vowed to continue their efforts even though an NRD Board majority vote has already decided the trail’s alignment.
