Nebraska lawmakers advanced a bill Tuesday that would cut in half the fines drivers pay for speeding in construction zones when workers aren't present.
Under the bill from Sen. Deb Fischer of Valentine, speeders in construction zones where workers were not present would pay the same fines for speeding outside of construction zones. If workers were present, those caught speeding would still have to pay double the normal fine.
Fischer says 24 other states already have a similar law. The bill easily advanced to the second round of debate with an emergency clause, meaning it would go into effect immediately if finally passed by the Legislature and then signed by the governor.
