A Nebraska man laid off from work a month ago and looking for a job decided to have a little fun to keep his spirits up. It turns out he may be ahead of his time.
"When the boss says, well I just got done talking to the accountant, well, you know." So Terry Hrdlicka retreated to his farm just outside Crete when an idea struck him.
"I put an ad on Craigslist. I was just goofing around one day and thought hell, I’ll put it up there as a joke. I got a bunch of replies, some of them kind of weird."
Terry wanted to trade farm fresh eggs "for beer and smokes." Before you think Hrdlicka's gone off the deep end, look at the logic. He's got nearly 100 chickens so he's got plenty of eggs and more than enough roosters. He also grows hay and corn on his 25-acre farm, two more commodities to trade. "We aren't going to starve."
The ad worked. He got some responses. "There was even some political commentary with some of them that came back, saying you've got the right idea, the way the economy's going and civilization in general, it may go back to worthless money and barter might be all we have left."
He placed the ad to raise his morale. "You gotta laugh to keep from crying." Unfortunately, not everyone understands. "I can't get anyone to trade for beer or smokes. They all just want to give me cash."
