The NEBRASKAland Foundation will present four achievement awards at the Statehood Day dinner Feb. 28 at the State Capitol.
The foundation will honor the Woods family of Lincoln, broadcaster Ron Hull of Lincoln, newspaperman Jack Pollock of Ogallala and former Nebraska Congressman Doug Bereuter.
The Woods family will receive the Distinguished NEBRASKAlander Award, which is given for service to the states social, historical, cultural or economic well-being.
For seven generations since 1873, the family of Frederick M. Woods has played a prominent role in the business, community and cultural development in Lincoln and the state. Their business enterprises have included horse importing, airplane manufacturing, telephone service, and residential and commercial real estate. The family's Woods Charitable Fund has had a significant philanthropic impact through $40 million in grants.
Hull will receive the Pioneer Award, which recognizes individuals whose contributions embody the spirit of Nebraska's heritage. Hull was in the forefront of developing Nebraska public television and played an influential role in public television programming at the state and national levels.
He is a member of the Nebraska Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He has been a leader in promoting Nebraska's history and literary heritage. Pollock will receive the Wagonmaster Award, which recognizes leadership in causes that benefit the state or nation.
Pollock, who has been involved in journalism for over 60 years, is the former longtime publisher of the Keith County News in Ogallala. He is a member of the Nebraska Journalism Hall of Fame. He has been active in promoting tourism and economic development in Ogallala and western Nebraska.
Bereuter, a Utica native, will receive the Trailblazer Award, which recognizes individuals who by their service set an example for others to follow. In Nebraska state government, Bereuter worked in the administration of former Gov. Norbert Tiemann and served in the Legislature for four years.
He had a distinguished 26-year tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he developed expertise in international matters. Since 2004, he has served as president of The Asia Foundation, a San Francisco-based organization that is committed to the development of the Asia-Pacific region.
Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale, who serves on the NEBRASKAland Foundation board, will help host the dinner. The foundation sponsors numerous activities and programs as part of its mission to promote Nebraska and the states good life.
