A sexual predator could soon be walking the streets. One of his victims is afraid, but has the courage to speak out so no one else will be hurt by her father.
Michelle McBride never had a chance to be a little girl.
"I was the age of three when my father started to abuse me. He abused me for five years from three to eight. The one thing I remember the most he used me to get my friends and go along with it. Running around telling them it's okay ‘cause I didn’t know any better and I know they were being abused."
Michelle's father, Mark McBride, was convicted of first-degree sexual assault in 1991 for assaulting his daughter and served four years. “I was in prison for five years, he was only in prison for four, what did I get?” asks Michelle. “He got freedom."
Mark’s freedom didn’t last very long. He soon attacked another child. “The recent one, he grabbed an 8-year-old boy in Lincoln and molested him in a park in 1999 and was convicted in 2000,” says estranged wife Kelly McBride.
That meant more jail time for Mark McBride and now his sentence is about up. His first sentence was four to six years, his second offense was 15-20 years. He served a total of 14 years for sexually assaulting two children.
For Michelle, it brings back horrible memories. She says she can't be in the same room with him without going through psychological trauma, but still, Mark is her father.
"Part of me, I'll always just love my father and I can’t stop that, I try every day. I hate him and I love him, there were parts of him that were good, there’s parts of him that are horrible."
Kelly worries that the horrible part of her estranged husband will surface again.
“It scares me. I'm afraid for all of the children in Nebraska and any area that he could drive to. He will re-offend, there’s no doubt his crimes have been escalating since childhood. Quite frankly, I'm afraid that he may eventually kill a child."
Mark was released from prison, but is currently being held in the Lancaster County Jail. He has not responded to Channel 6 News’ request for an interview.
