More snow is on the way. About an inch to an inch-and-a-half is expected in the metro Tuesday morning, starting around 6-7 a.m.
Some took advantage of the snow to enjoy sledding at Omaha’s Memorial Park on Sunday. "The snow is perfect, yeah, just thought we'd kinda catch the rush because I'm sure everyone will be coming out today so we thought just hit it,” said Tim Hern.
Not everyone is enjoying the cold weather or the snow. The Siena/Francis House at 17th and Nicholas says the recent cold spell has brought in more people seeking shelter.
A room reserved for daytime dining will be full of beds at night. Between its two buildings, 424 people stayed at the shelter Saturday night. Winter weather typically sees an additional 60-80 people a night.
"It will be four or five rows of mats,” says Frank Bailey of the Siena/Francis House. “They go from this wall all the way to the other wall and they go all the way around the corner by my office and just full of people."
The shelter provided 304 meals for breakfast Sunday.
Many got a jump on the weather by stocking up on extra items Saturday. Westlake Hardware at 90th and Maple was selling plenty of windshield washer fluid, shovels and ice melt, something Bill O'Malley of Omaha said he goes through quickly and doesn't want to be without.
"Quite a bit, quite a bit. I've got a pretty big driveway so we've got to keep it on hand. I work outside a lot, so you've got to be ready for it and you've got to dress for it. I'm about done with it (winter). I'm ready for it to be over."
