As promised, police departments across the heartland are continuing their crackdown on drunk driving over the holiday weekend.

One checkpoint operating Saturday night in Papillion stopped 650 cars resulting in two arrests. Another in Sarpy County resulted in seven drunk driving arrests and dozens of other citations and warnings.

The Lancaster County Sheriff's Department has also been setting up checkpoints throughout the weekend, trying to keep roads safe for those attending the Nebraska State Fair and Husker football game.

The department says it typically stops between 300 and 400 drivers during those checkpoints.

This weekend's strict enforcement is part of the largest drunk driving enforcement in state history. In all, 45 Nebraska agencies have received more than $250,000 in grants to go after drunk drivers.

Aside from making the streets safer, Papillion Police Chief Leonard Houloose says the checkpoints also send a message to the community.

"We also want to be highly visible," Houloose said. "Not only to the folks we suspect are drinking and driving, but those folks in the community that support us in these efforts."

Houloose adds that enforcement is necessary to cut down on repeat offenders.

"Quite simply, the message hasn't gotten out to the people that we want it to get out to. And a lot of times that's the repeat drunk driver. What we find is the repeat drunk driver has a much higher blood alcohol content," Houloose said.

Checkpoints and special enforcement across the heartland will continue through Monday night.
