As of the first of the year, Iowa joined 36 other states in requiring that all cigarettes sold be fire-safe.

The cigarettes are designed to extinguish themselves if not puffed. The idea is to prevent fires caused when cigarettes are left unattended.

Now Nebraska lawmakers will soon be considering a similar rule. On Monday, Senator Arnie Stuthman of Platte Center proposed a fire-safe law.

Support for the bill is coming from a surprising source. Lobbyist James Moylan is a tobacco lobbyist representing Reynolds American. He says since so many other states have passed such laws "we might as well get it done" in Nebraska.
