The first laboratory confirmed case of flu is being reported in Douglas County. The Health Department Tuesday said the adult female infected was hospitalized but has since recovered.
In a news release the department reminded county residents that it is not too late to get a flu shot. It also reminds people to remember basic health practices that include handwashing and covering our mouths when we cough.
This year's flu vaccine is recommended for young people from six months through 18 years and adults 50 years of age and older.
It is also recommended for pregnant women and those caring for children less than six months of age, people with chronic medical problems and residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities. All health care workers are encouraged to get a flu shot as well.
In the 2007-2008 flu season Douglas County reported its first case in late December and by the time the season ended more than 1,300 people had confirmed cases of the virus.
An average of 5 to 20 percent of the United States population gets the flu every year. More than 200,000 people are hospitalized annually from flu complications, including 20,000 children. Every year about 36,000 people in the U.S. die from the flu.
