While the suspect in a police pursuit sits in jail, his mother offers her apologies to those injured during the chase. David Wagner, 35 of Carter Lake, was arrested at 80th and Pacific after leading officers on a 20-minute pursuit.
"I apologize for the people that got hurt,” said Linda Salcedo, David Wagner’s mother. “I thank God that nobody died over his actions. And he will have to do the time for his actions. And he won't get to see his daughter grow up."
Tracy Bolan, Wagner’s girlfriend and the mother of his child, says he is addicted to meth.
"He's a good guy. He really is,” Bolan said. “But the addiction can be ugly. It can make ugly people."
She says he hasn’t been to their home in Carter Lake since Thanksgiving and hasn’t been there for their eight-month-old daughter Jenna.
"He's missing first everything,” Bolan said. “She's got teeth. She's trying to walk. She says ‘da, da’ more than she says ‘ma, ma’ and I’m with her 24/7. I just wish he would quit. But what can you do. You can't make somebody change. If they don't want it they're not going to change."
On Wednesday, Police wanted to question Wagner about the murder of his cousin, 31-year-old Timothy Potts, who was shot at the Citadel Apartments near 87th and Q last Friday night.
Wagner’s mother says he was with Potts at the apartment complex that night when the shooting occurred.
"He (Potts) went with DJ (Wagner) to help move a TV,” Salcedo said. “DJ said there was arguing in Spanish. He didn't understand what they were saying. The guy pulled out a gun. They all start running. He passed Timmy up and Timmy went down."
The chase began Wednesday around 2:45 p.m. at the Citadel Apartments near 87th and Q. Wagner, not a suspect in the homicide, fled from officers in a red Jeep, hitting an unmarked police car. The car's bumper was knocked off and left lying in the street.
The pursuit went through southwest Omaha, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph.
Witnesses say the Jeep blew through the intersection of 80th and Pacific and hit a vehicle. The driver of that car was taken to the hospital with a knee injury.
The Jeep ended up in the yard of a home at 8002 Pacific. Wagner was tackled by a police officer as he ran from the Jeep and was taken into custody. He was checked at the hospital and then taken to police headquarters.
Wagner is currently at the Douglas County Jail awaiting his first court appearance. On Wednesday he was booked for felony assault of an officer and four counts of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.
Wagner has a criminal record with Omaha Police dating back to 1987. He's accused of resisting arrest, theft, and flight from officers in several cases.
