Omaha Police have made an arrest in connection to a double shooting on Christmas near 25th and Leavenworth. Police say the suspect is 21-year-old Brandell Ward. Police say the arrest was made following a no-knock search warrant. A gun was also taken from the scene.
Ward now faces a weapons charge, as well as two counts of assault.
The victims are Isaiah Bingham and Jaquan Williamson, both 22-years-old. They suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The shooting happened around 4:20 pm at the Lancaster Apartments near 25th Ave and Leavenworth St.
"The inside of the complex is a crime scene,” said Lt. Shayna Ray with the Omaha Police Department. According to investigators, at least one of the victims lives there.
Paramedics reached them just before police arrived. "(They’re) treating two male victims,” Lt. Ray said.
One man was shot in the face. The other was shot in the leg. Police canvassed the area but haven’t said if anyone witnessed the crime.
One neighbor, who saw the aftermath, is left with an uneasy feeling. "Worried,” Maria Delgado said. “I mean, worried because you know you're looking for a good place to live, peaceful, because you have kids. I have five kids. And it's sad."
It’s especially sad during the holidays, she said. "We have visitors and kids around everywhere."
There’s no word yet on a motive. "We do have a possible person of interest and a vehicle description,” said Lt. Ray, “a red Ford pickup." She emphasized that person is not being called a suspect at this time.
The crime lab van and yellow tape is not exactly a familiar sight to neighbors whom Channel 6 spoke with. However, it’s not a surprise, either.
"Yah, I guess it's everywhere,” Delgado said. “It's scary. It scares me."
Fright is an emotion that's not supposed to coincide with the holiday. Flashing lights are normally reserved for Christmas trees. Atop police cruisers at the crime scene, the lights were, instead, a sign of Omaha's latest act of violence.
