Drunk Drivers Be Warned

Dale Beller has a sobering sight for anyone who chooses to drink and drive this holiday season.

His parents' car, crushed in a head on collision is on a sheriff’s trailer for display at schools and public events.

It’s a painful reminder of how a repeat drunk driver drove the wrong way on a New Mexico interstate, killing Beller’s parents and another couple riding with them on vacation.

Dale Beller says, “The mental picture we’re trying to give is don’t drink and drive because this is reality.”

Beller is part of the Omaha area kickoff to the “You Drink and Drive You Lose” campaign.

Law enforcement agencies from Douglas and Sarpy County held a demonstration of what it takes to be impaired. Volunteers were asked to drink then be given sobriety tests.

Then they tried to start a car with an ignition lock after blowing into a control device.

A representative of smart start also says some judges can order a small camera be installed in a convicted drunk driver’s car.

That would ensure someone with restricted driving privileges doesn’t have a sober friend take the test for them.
