Consumer rebates are supposed to save us money. However, a woman who contacted Six On Your Side claims her rebate connected to a reputable business is actually costing her -- and she's right!

Nellie Sneed and her husband Larry purchased a Nextar GPS System that included a $20 rebate. The couple received the rebate check and cashed it. That’s when their problems began. The check was returned to their bank as a “stop payment”. On top of that, the bank charged the Sneeds a $5 stop payment fee.

Mrs. Sneed said, “I assume I did it right since they sent me the check, but then they stopped payment on it so I'm really curious as to why.”

Six On Your Side investigated and discovered the Sneeds are not alone with this problem.

Nextar says the company it hired to process the rebates, Continental Promotion Group, filed for bankruptcy. The money Nextar gave the company to pay for the rebates is gone.

Nextar is asking anyone with a rebate check posted before November 14 to avoid cashing it and start the rebate process all over again. Nextar says it remains financially strong and healthy, so it will resolve the problem for its customers.

The company has provided information on its website to explain the process. Here is a
link.

I, too, received a rebate check from BIC for purchasing some pencils at Staples that said try these for fee, and now the check from BIC for 4.99 was returned with STOP PAYMENT and my bank is charging me 19.00-the person only being charged 5.00 was lucky!! I happened across this website while I was looking for an address for the Bic corporation. I will never again send in rebates if this is the way the companies want to treat us.

I received a rebate check from BIC Corporation that was just sent back to me by my bank with STOP PAYMENT stamped across the front and a $5 handling fee from my bank. Does anyone know if that same company handled the BIC rebate?

Thats nothing compared to medical insurance. I ended up keeping 3 inch binders, having every medical visit with all the paperwork by incident date. Having 100% insurance with UHC, I spent 30 hours a month, proving the payments were made. My last transaction with UHC, was faxes and mailed to them for $1400 and they said they lost the claim after twice contacting the attorney general of Nebraska. I often had to call UHC for the check number and lot number and read Alegent Health to prove the bills were paid. Once my wife a patient at Midlands Hospital where the bill was paid in full sent me the bill saying i was the patient. After some letters I sent the Attorney General the patient admission slip and test results with my wifes name on it. Imagine being elderly with 100% insurance and not having kept proof of payment, how many elderly are evicted from their homes by credit collection agencies where the bills were 100% paid but the elderly have no proof of all the tons of paper.

And in order to get your rebate you have to send in the ORIGINAL receipt and the UPC code from the product. Now that all that's been LOST IN THE MAIL the rebate companies know that you have no proof you bought it or no proof that you mailed it in. I know this is different then the story about the check bouncing - but now what are these people supposed to do?

I hate rebates also. Companies know that most people won't end up turning them in. I agree they should just offer the savings up front. And to Helen J, while I am glad to see you're sympathetic, I think this could have happened to anyone and it probably wasn't targeted against the elderly.....

id be livid! i hate rebates and really wont do them unless there a decent amount of money. there just so much work.

I rarely let rebates entice me to buy stuff... I'll only do it if it is an instant rebate or a VERY large mail in rebate. Helenj.. this could happen to anyone.. what is it with you always commenting about taking advantage of elderly people?

Posted by: CM on Dec 4, 2008 at 12:32 PM
To: helen j. I'm outraged when people read things into an article that noone else sees. Please re-post and tell me where it says these people are elderly. If they are and you knew that from personal association, then you should have said so but to assume that it happened to an elderly pair is wrong. I'm not elderly and apply for rebates if they are worth it.

I'll second that motion first impression. It took 3 trees worth of paper to get refunds and rebates on a washer and dryer. Then the mass confusion of it going in 3 diffrent directions....What a pian, never agian!

I am outraged! I hate when people take advantage of the elderly like this!

Rebate forms are long and confusing. They do it on purpose just figuring half the people won't bother with all the work and hassel to get a lousy $20.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE LASTING IMPRESSIONS AND EVEN IF THIS IS A REPUTABLE COMPANY THEY CONTRACTED WITH A COMPANY THAT IS GOING TO TARNISH THEIR IMAGE, MY OPINION IS IF YOU REALLY WANT TO REWARD CUSTOMERS FOR BUYING YOUR PRODUCT THEN JUST GIVE THEM THE SAVINGS UP FRONT, IT SAVES ALL INVOLVED TIME AND MONEY. THING IS A LOT OF COMPANIES COUNT ON PEOPLE NOT EVEN BOTHERING TO SEND IN THE REBATES WHICH MOST PEOPLE WONT BECAUSE THEY WONT TAKE THE TIME. THAT'S WHY I SAY IF YOU REALLY WANT TO REWARD YOU CUSTOMER FOR BUYING YOUR PRODUCT, JUST GIVE THE DISCOUNT UPRONT AND NOT WASTE ANYBODYS TIME.
