A Heartland man is recovering from injuries he received trying to stop a burglar from stealing his possessions.

It all began when the 34-year old man returned home to his Downtown apartment near 19th and Leavenworth.

It was late evening on Friday, November 28th.

The victim tells police he interrupted a burglary in progress, but was not aware of it until he turned on the light, and saw a man start to run out of his home.

Acting on impulse the victim says he grabbed the thief as he attempted to run past him. That is when he noticed the burglar was armed with a handgun. The two struggled for control of the firearm, with the burglar eventually able to free himself and flee.

No shots were fired during the incident.

The victim did however break at least one bone in his hand during the struggle, he was taken to Creighton University Medical Center for treatment.

The fleeing burglar left without any of the victim's personal property.

I'm sorry. But I can't applaud the guy. He's a straight up idiot. Why would you struggle with somebody who has a freaking gun?? Whatever you had in your apartment, was it worth dying for??

Thank God this man only broke one bone. Good for you fighting back!! I hope the bad karma kicks in sooner rather than later for the robber. Either way, what goes around comes around.

To Anonymous at 2:30PM..... You are kidding right? Were you ticketed for one of those???? Those things are against the law and a threat to all of us.....ask anyone who has had a family member killed by someone that was driving under the influence.......I am glad they are watching for and catching more of those....just wish the penalty was more harsh

To anonymous at 230 p.m. Are you kidding me you must be a kid or one of those parents that get mad at the police when they catch your kid doing wrong. What exactly is wrong with police getting DUIs off the road or catching kids at a party that end up leaving and crashing because they are drunk. People like you don't make sense to me. Also I'm sure most officers would love to just have to worry about those problems. For the victim in this story its a shame you didn't knock him out and have the police find him laid out on your floor

They won't catch him. You need police that care about things besides MIPs and DUIs.

Good job! More people need to stand up for themselves againsed these worthless people. Too bad about your hand though. Maybe that guy will think twice about breaking and entering next time.

Too bad he didn't have the help of a Smith&Wessen.

Oh man I wish the victim could have gotten control of the gun and shot the burglar to death.

Good for you for fighting back. I wish you could have done him some serious bodily harm. This city has been ravaged by crooks, theives, gangs, etc. Lets give them a taste of thier own medicine. Glad the victim is not more seriously injured! Upset the robber isn't... I hope that guy gets what is coming to him.

I realize he lives in an apartment, but there should be more security for these tenants, ESPECIALLY around the holidays. The guy is lucky he didn't get killed. Hope they catch the worthless piece of garbage who did this.
