Omaha's downtown visitors center has a new look. A grand opening was held Tuesday to celebrate the center's renovation.

The makeover has tripled the size of the building on the corner of 10th and Farnam, adding more goodies for visitors. The facility includes five high-definition video displays showing virtual tours of the city and an interactive kiosk with over 500 entertainment options.

Center employees say the new shop shows off what Omaha has to offer. “This new visitor center has a design which is both progressive and creative,” says Dana Markel, executive director of the Omaha Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“It’s an image we best think best represents our growing city. It has a modern and contemporary flavor, but maintains a warm and genuine feel."

The center has a coffee shop with free Wi-Fi access and it also sells mugs, shirts and other Omaha apparel. It is open seven days a week with newly expanded hours, 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday thru Saturday and 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday.

"We encourage residents of Omaha to become visitors in their own hometown," says Markel. "You'll be amazed at the fun you can find in your backyard. It can be quite a discovery and our ambassadors are here to help."

Wouldn't it make more sense for a Visitor's Center to be along I-80? Since most of the traffic comes into the state on I-80. If they are counting on the new walking bridge traffic, they will be disappointed.

The "visitor center" can get a makeover and a new look BUT you are also running a story that says there is not enough room in the homeless shelters. It's so nice to know that Omaha is narrow-minded enough to take better care of it damn VISITORS then it does it's own residents. Homeless or not, those people LIVE/reside in this city and many of them are SLEEPING in the Gene Leahey Mall.
