Cass county has been designated as one of 22 "Priority Counties" by the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety for the 2009 fiscal year.
That designation puts agencies such as the Cass County Sheriff’s Department and Plattsmouth Police Department first in line for funding assistance with the goal of reducing fatal and serious injury crashes.
The Cassgram reports that the grants zero in on the traffic safety areas of occupant protection, youth driving, alcohol impaired driving and/or speed.
Higher incidences of speeding and motorists not wearing seatbelts were the two major factors in the designation of Cass as a "Priority County."
The Cass County rates exceeded the state averages in each of those two categories, according to 2007 statistics.
