Metro organizations that help the homeless and near-homeless have seen a jump in numbers the past few weeks and blame the economy.

The Rev. Harry Wallar, director of MOHM's Place in Council Bluffs, says there are about 50 more people eating at the facility each night and numbers are up about 500-1,000 people per month.

Open Door Mission director Joan Meradith in Omaha says the shelter's numbers are up by 46 percent and she is seeing more families than last year.

I'm sorry to hear about your brother-in-law. However, most people are there because of circumstances largely out of their control. When so many of our jobs are being shipped overseas, what else do people expect?

My brother-in-law has been at a local homeless shelter for more thsn 2 years. He is there not because of the economy, but too lazy to get a job. My wife has tried to help him, but got tired of all the excuses he would give her for not getting a job.
