A man pushes an 85-year-old woman to the ground to steal her purse.

The victim tells police it happened Thursday afternoon as she was leaving Metropolitan Building and Loan at 61st and Military. She says the man ran up, pushed her, and took off with her purse.

The woman suffered a minor injury from being pushed. She was taken to Immanuel Medical Center.

Officers searched the area, but were not able to find the suspect.

JLL, thanks for the tip about leaving one's purse at home. I'm from a small town and do shop in Omaha from time to time. I appreciate your safety tip.

Make purse snatching a felony.

Julia- Please enlighten the police where the next purse snatching is going to take place! Do you have any idea how many thousands of businesses and parking lots there are in this city? Tens of thousands of women carry there purses all over this city and don't get purse snatched. Lets say there are 200 total police women on the entire police force. Lets also assume that out of 400000 people in Omaha, 200000 of them are women carrying purses. If you put all 200 female officers out at the same time, they would make up .1% of the women out there with purses. So we are supposed to waste our female officers with a .1% chance they will be the target of a purse snatching? Also I'm pretty sure we don't have any 85 year old women on the department. As mentioned by several people below, these animals prey on the weakest among us and would likely not target any of our 21 to 50 year old female officers.

This will only get more common as Christmas gets closer. Pack your tasers, ladies.

Don't parents teach manners anymore? What a dumb question that was. The elderly can be critically injured from a fall. I'm glad to hear the woman will be okay. What is happening here? This whole town has just snapped. We've already got rampant gun violence and have recently added daytime violent purse snatchings and multiple, violent convenience store robberies. Has the economy hit us that hard? Or has the next generation of undisciplied, immoral and disrespectful thugs come of age? When will the good guys come of age again?

Since there has been all these purse snatchings I quit carrying my purse when I go shopping. I got a small wallet that I can put in my coat pocket & I leave my purse at home. Especially when we will be out doing a lot of shopping during the holidays I recommend women be safe & just leave you purse at home if you can...maybe I'll get some pepper spray too...it's just so scarey!!

To Typical: Who cares if these punks are sociopaths? When one of these poor, misunderstood people who didn't have the love of their mommy robs me, the last thing I'm thinking about is whether they really just need a sit-down. I love people like you who want us to try and understand why someone puts a gun in our face and rob us or steal our car or break into our house. Who cares! The fact is that they ARE putting a gun in our face and stealing my stuff that I go to work everyday to earn. I have no pity for these punks and some good old West justice would be a good fix for it.

That's so sad.. you know she's probably on fixed income too... :(

How low can someone go?

Too many attacks of this type are appearing in the news. The police can't be everywhere at once and neighborhood watches may help. It's really people watching out for their family, friends and neighbors that will bring peace to a community. (Being your brothers keeper) It does work.Way too often the "I don't want to get involved" attitude leads to further problems that could be prevented.

How about placing some under cover cops out there with purses?

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 20, 2008 at 11:56 PM
Never thought I would say it, but thank god I live in Council Bluffs.

how sad

Hey, don't get me wrong - in my twisted world we'd hang, draw, and quarter violent robbers like these. There would be no second offenses. That's the trouble with letting these thugs out of jail after only half of their minimum sentence is served; they just get out and do something even worse.

The looser who attacked and robbed this woman will never contribute anything to this world. He is a parasite. He hopefully will be joining his daddy in prison soon. Maybe his mom will introduce them on visiting day.

people please watch out for each other---together we can stop these crazies!

Posted by: D on Nov 20, 2008 at 08:28 PM
I dare someone to take my purse. Of course no one is going to target me because I'm not an old defensive lady.

Posted by: KB on Nov 20, 2008 at 07:11 PM
What a spineless lily livered piece of work. I feel for the woman I hope she is ok.

Posted by: Ben on Nov 20, 2008 at 05:57 PM
Just like the animal kingdom. The bigger stronger animal either attacks the younger less experienced animal or it attacks the weak hurt animal. Welcome to the jungle in north Omaha.

Posted by: Typical Criminals on Nov 20, 2008 at 05:41 PM
See, people did post along those lines. Look, these are criminals we're talking about, not contestants. Like any predatory animal, they hit the old, the small, the weak, the lame. It's what they do, that's the way it'll always be with this type of thug.

Posted by: To: Typical on Nov 20, 2008 at 05:25 PM
Why are we dimwits for stating our opinion that this "man" is a jerk??? I'm sure everyone realizes that criminals are sociopaths. Does that mean we aren't allowed to be upset that he would attack someone's grandmother???? People tend to rise to the level of expectation around them. It's too bad someone didn't expect more from him and then maybe he wouldn't be on the street knocking over some poor elderly woman.

Posted by: citizen on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:51 PM
I hope he's proud of himself. I'm sure his mother would be. At least be more of a sport and pick on someone your own size. What a jerk.

Posted by: Lydia on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:26 PM
It takes a real man to steal from an 85 year old woman. Your parents must be so proud of you.

Posted by: Bill on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:21 PM
The people committing these crimes are nothing but scumbags!

Posted by: CJ on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:16 PM
My God. What a pathetic excuse for a human being.

Posted by: Grace on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:10 PM
Coward !!!

Posted by: S on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:09 PM
Don't parents teach their kids respect? How in the world could anyone hurt an 85 year old woman?

Posted by: Typical Criminals on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:09 PM
Before any dimwit ask "why rob old people, why not pick on someone your own size", remember that criminals are for the most part sociopaths, and they victimize the small, the weak, the disabled, and the old, precisely because they are easier targets. The criminal isn't looking for a fair fight, they just want your money. If you don't realize that by now, then I pity you.

Posted by: Lynda on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:05 PM
I am sure you are using the word"man" as a synonym for punk in this report. Clearly he is a punk. Anyone who would push an 85 year old woman to the ground is a punk. I hope she is ok. I will give these punks something to take with them if they take my purse and trust and believe my purse would come right back into my own hand!
