Gets 18-20 years in prison for beating 3-month-old

A babysitter was sentenced Wednesday to 18-20 years behind bars for punching and slamming an infant into a door. It was the maximum sentence for Mona Walker.

Walker pleaded no contest to felony child abuse in September. She will be eligible for parole in nine years.

Walker beat 3-month-old Lauren Wentz last March, later telling police she was frustrated because the baby wouldn't stop crying. Lauren suffered severe injuries, including a fractured skull.

The Wentz family was in the courtroom for the sentencing. Lauren's grandfather asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence.

"I was concerned that the possibility of a shorter sentence would just diminish the actions, since she did as much as she could and not take her life,” said Dean Kreitlow. "What more could she have done, what more do you have to do to get the most serious consequences from this class of felony?"

Lauren's father, Jared Wentz, said the sentencing was a relief. "That's what we were hoping for, the max and that's what she got."

Lauren and her family are facing a lifelong struggle. "It's a long, hard road, but she improves little by little," said mother Emily Wentz. "Every day we see something new, so she's getting there. It's long and hard, but she's strong and she's happy."

Lauren is now 11 months old and unable to crawl. Her doctors are worried her vision could be permanently impaired.

"It does get hard, when you see other kids especially, that are her age and older or younger and that does make it really hard, but we just try to put that out of our mind and focus on her and what she can do," said Emily.

"What she can do is make progress and we're hopeful for that, as much progress as we can have," added Kreitlow.

Emily offered a plea to all frustrated caregivers. "Just walk out, just leave, you know we would've been so much better off if she would've left those three kids in that house by themselves."

Lauren's medical bills have reached more than $380,000. "People have been generous with donations to help out with a lot of the expenses,” said Kreitlow.

"The public, people we don't even know, just coming up and giving us a hundred dollar bill,” said Jared. “You know, it means a lot."

There is a fund set up at First National Bank called The Lauren Wentz Charitable Donation Account.

She continues to have therapy twice a week and is working with a vision therapist to try to improve her eyesight.

How did this turn into some argument about abortion? The lady slammed this poor baby's head into a door. Lauren was helpless, she now cannot crawl and her vision is permanently damaged. She did not ask for this...case closed.

I must be one of the lucky ones to have family in town to watch my children on a daily basis. My mom watches my son on a daily basis and doesn't charge me for it because she enjoys it and it helps me at doctor appointments when he gets sick. I feel for the parents, because I have four children with chronic illness and it's not related to abuse. As for Mona, yes she deserves longer, however she might get her revenge on her in prison by someone bigger than she is.

Liz, you are an interesting study in duality. You chastise Aaron that as a man "you will never have to have the responsibility of carrying a baby." You haven't watched national news lately. You also say he'll never deal with the "decisions and responsibility that go along with [abortion]." I know women like you. No man is allowed input to what is a "woman's decision", because "it's her body" and none of his business. So you won't mind if your boyfriend or husband has sex with other women, because it's his body and none of your business, right? You are a Sexist with a capital "S". Aaron described partial birth abortion, where a full term baby is delivered but killed just before leaving the birth canal. That's legal. But if the abortionist waited a few seconds more, then punched the baby in the face and slammed it against a door, that would be a crime. You tell Aaron abortion comments are irrelevant, because you can't defend the few seconds between a legal kill and a crime of abuse.

My prayers go out to the Wentz family as the babysitter deserves to get what is coming to her. I am a mother of three and it scares me to take them to a babysitter

no prison ,,just throw here into a wall by someone way bigger than her punch her and cause brain damage oh wait you first have to have a brain . Being brainless is the only excuse let the father punch the daylights out of her you no like the oldest book in the world says an eye for an eye and do unto others

In addition to a long PRISON sentence, she should have to wear a sign at all times that says she beat up a 3 month old baby. Let everyone know what a monster she is.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Wentz family. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for abuse! Especially that of a child! It breaks my heart to hear about this. And I agree, Mona deserves much worse than what she received! However, if she's put in general population, she will have a very rough time. Even the worst of the worse do not like child abusers, molesters, etc. She may just get what she deserves in the end!

18-20 YRS ISNT ENOUGH FOR WHAT THIS WOMEN DONE SHE ALSO NEEDS TO PAY ALL THE MEDICAL BILLS OUR COURT SYSTEM STINKS

Posted by: AJ on Nov 19, 2008 at 09:08 PM
Continued prayers for Lauren and her family... she is such a sweet and adorable looking baby. I wish the judge's name was published in the article. He/she should be commended for imposing the maximum sentence available for this most heinous of criminals.

To Anonymous - I don't think that anyone "wants" to put their child in daycare - especially with the way of the world today, but most people don't have a choice. We made a conscious decision to arrange our schedules so that one of us are always with the boys. It's a risk that we will not take - but we have the luxury of making that choice. Unfortunately, we sacrifice our own relationship in more ways than one but we made that decision for our children. My heart goes out to this child and her family and I pray for a full recovery or even a more improved recovery if that is possible. As for Mona, she's pathetic and deserves a little piece of hell everyday she sits in prison.

I never trust House daycares anyway it doesnt seem safe that people have house daycares anyway because it is their home and not a facilty so other things go on in their house

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 19, 2008 at 07:56 PM
Why would any parent want to put their child in daycare. These days you cannot trust anyone. This mother droped her child off to someone she obviously trusted, and look what that B**** did, shame on you mona, have fun rotting in jail and thinking every day what you did to that innocent child. I wish that you would never be able to get out of jail. To the family of this beautiful baby, I am so sorry, and you are in my prayers

To 'Aaron' your comments are WAY out of line. THis woman made the decison to basically beat a child in her care. This has NOTHING to do with abortion and it never has. For you to make such a 'connection' is way out of line. Post your comments on a board on abortion not about the limited punishment of this 'caregiver'. Or let me guess, you feel that this 'poor' woman is wrongly accused and wrongly sentenced. Obviously you have no regards or concerns about Lauren's family or her future.

I agree with the first comment and it is a sad situation. My heart goes out to the family of this child!!

Posted by: Todd on Nov 19, 2008 at 04:56 PM
What a shame, she got off easy. She should have gotten a life sentence. Looser...

Posted by: TAMMI on Nov 19, 2008 at 04:11 PM
MY HEART REALLY GOES OUT TO THIS FAMILY. I DON'T THINK THAT 20 YRS IN PRISON IS GOING TO HELP THIS LITTLE GIRL. WHAT WOULD THIS LADY DO IF SOMEONE TREATED HER KIDS LIKE THAT,WOULD SHE WANT THE WORSE PUNISHMENT POSSIABLE FOR WHO EVER WOULD DO THAT TO HER KIDS. SHE IS A SICK PERSON AND SHE NEEDS HELP AND GOD BE WITH HER.

Posted by: Jack on Nov 19, 2008 at 04:05 PM
Is there a fund or fundraiser planned to help with her current and future medical bills--I would contribute to this cause. Bless Lauren and her family. I also hope this women nver has the option of being one on one with any children in the future. That should have been part of her sentence-- She should have to register as a child abuser--just like the sex offenders

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 19, 2008 at 04:00 PM
I hope someone punches and slams her against the wall

Posted by: BJ on Nov 19, 2008 at 03:12 PM
My prayers are with the Wentz family. Lauren is a beautiful child. I agree that Walker should be held accountable for the medical bills. The Wentz' have suffered enough.

Posted by: Michelle on Nov 19, 2008 at 02:51 PM
Lauren was 3 months old when her "babysitter" injured her. Babies are innocent and defenseless for much longer than the first 30 days of their life. Please make the Safe Haven age older than 30 days. I know the parents didn't hurt their precious little one, but some parents do and perhaps the Safe Haven law can truly become a safe haven for some children.

mona all i can say is may god have mercy on your soul

Posted by: Liz on Nov 19, 2008 at 01:59 PM
If she weren't so big I would take her big self and knock her against a wall. And TO AARON- no abortion comments here it is totally irrelevant, especially from a man as you will never have to have the responsibility of carrying a baby and the decisions and responsibility that go along with it....

Posted by: Bob on Nov 19, 2008 at 01:45 PM
20 years isn't enough. For an adult to take out their frustrations on a baby is completely inexcusable. Send her to the gallows.

Posted by: I AGREE on Nov 19, 2008 at 01:04 PM
I agree, all of Precious Lauren's medical bills related to what Mona did should be on Mona's head. Her family should have to cough it up, as they say because she didn't have the maturity to handle a small crying child. And she should never be able to work anywhere near children again. She made her bed, now let her lay in it.

Posted by: Mickey on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:51 AM
I agree with the other two comments. I feel anyone that can do that to a child should get life without ever getting the chance to parole.

Posted by: Ann on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:48 AM
How do you get that upset at an infant within 10 minutes of the parents walking out the door??? The outcome for Lauren isn't as wonderful as it is for Mona

Posted by: MOM on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:47 AM
To Ken, I completely agree with you Ken, This poor family has to suffer along, with the poor inocent child for years and years to come. In my eyes this was attempted murder of a child and this monster will be out to hurt another child. Our system is not right.

Posted by: Rather not say. on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:28 AM
So let's here something good about the world. There's more good than bad.

Posted by: OmahaAnnie on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:03 AM
Of course this woman should be made to pay the medical bills for Emily and she should be neutered.

Posted by: Aaron on Nov 19, 2008 at 11:01 AM
So you can get 18 years in prison for slamming a baby against a door, but it's not a crime to stick scissors in an unborn baby's head to kill it? Strange logic. I know people have different opinions on abortion, but you have to admit it's strange.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 19, 2008 at 10:54 AM
I sure wish all child abusers and other killers would get this much of a sentence. The drunk driver who killed my TWO parents only got 6-20 so he'll be out in 3. She's in for 9 minimum??

Posted by: Susan on Nov 19, 2008 at 10:53 AM
Say a prayer for Lauren and her mom and dad. No sentence could ever repair the hurt to this little girl and her parents. But with her incredible parents love and God's help she has a great future in front of her, whatever it holds.

Posted by: Rather not say. on Nov 19, 2008 at 10:45 AM
How could someone do that to a sweet, innocent, little baby? Why was she a babysitter? I'll say a prayer for the baby and the family that has to deal with this every day.

Posted by: Chris on Nov 19, 2008 at 10:45 AM
Why would this psychopath be eligible for parole?? Violent offenders such as this should be sentenced and expected to serve the ENTIRE time with NO parole. Keep the crazies locked up as much as possible. Man, our judicial system is horrible.

Posted by: Melodie on Nov 19, 2008 at 10:43 AM
I certainly hope they keep her locked up for the entire 20 years. Being eligible for parole in 9 years isn't nearly long enough time for what she did to baby Lauren. From what I understand, the prison population doesn't like those who harm children----good luck Mona----NOT!!!

Posted by: Tonya on Nov 19, 2008 at 10:36 AM
She should be sentenced to pay back all those medical bills and she should get more than 18-20 yrs. After 18-20 yrs (lets face it, she'll be out before then), she'll be able to live her life normally, where as Lauren may not.

Posted by: Ken on Nov 19, 2008 at 10:31 AM
There should be something more severe done as punishment here, but I'm not sure what. The woman who did this will get three hot meals every day, a roof over her head, a chance to exercise and get a free education over the next few years. What does the family get? Huge medical bills, a lifetime of asking 'What if?', continued physical rehab/therapy for the child, and self-doubt. Doesn't hardly seem fair to me.
