A 46 year-old woman was mugged while walking near 50th and Burt Street early Tuesday evening. The suspects got away with her wallet, fortunately the woman was not hurt.

Police say the call came in Tuesday around 6:45 p.m. The victim told them she was walking home when two males approached her and demanded money.

She tells police one of the men pointed a gun at her.

After stealing her wallet, the suspects drove off in a red sedan with tinted windows.

Police are looking for 2 males in their 20's and the driver of the get-away car.

To the post looking for suggestions, I understand that we don't need to call the police for every abnormality in the neighborhood. What I was trying to get at is that we have gotten away from our traditional neighborhood communities. We need to get to know our neighbors by not pulling right into the garage and closing the door when we get home. If one of our neighbors is walking home in the dark, grab your husband or wife and go for a short walk with the neighbor. Safety in numbers. We have completely lost a sense of community, which may be to blame for the rise in crime rates. I don't want to be afraid in my own neighborhood.

Who ever said that we are not concerned about the victim? I just think it is disrespectful to say that someone who is ONLY 46 is elderly!

why am i not surprised to hear this

Why is everyone so concerned that Helen called her elderly? you should be concerned about the victim... and if the person is older then you then yes they are an elder. Doesn't matter the age!!! my thoughts and prays go out to this elderly lady...

Helen J..How old are YOU that you consider someone who is 46 "elderly"? GEEZ, what is someone who is 60 years old to you...dead?

WERE THE HECK ARE THE POLICE AT FOR ALL THESE CRIMES THAT ARE GOING ON. WE NEED ALOT MORE COPS TO PATROLKE THE AREA. THIS VIOLENCE IS GETTING WAY OUT OF HAND AND I AM TO AFRAID TO LET MY KIDS OUT TO PLAY.HIRING MORE COPS WOULD BE THE KEY TO THIS VIOLENCE.

What do you mean “take back our neighborhood”? If I witness a crime, of course I will call the police, but you can’t just call them if there is someone walking down your street that you don’t recognize. Don’t get me wrong, I also don’t think everyone should run out and buy a gun and strap it to their hip, but really, what are we supposed to do? I also don’t blame OPD. In a perfect work there would be a police officer on every corner at all times and there would be NO crime ANYWHERE, but let’s get real, that is never going to happen. I guess my plan is to avoid high crime areas at all costs, won’t go out at night alone, lock the doors to my house at all times, check in and around my car before getting in and out and locking it as soon as I get in. I’m not knocking the neighborhood thing; I just don’t understand what me and my neighbors can do unless we stand post outside our homes at all hours armed with weapons, cell phones and video cameras. Suggestions???

Would someone else get a concealed permit like me already ?

You just never know where or when you will be the victim. Ummm, Helen, if 46 is elderly, then I've lost all hope for hanging onto my youth.

I agree with Zack, we need to come together as neighbors and take back our neighborhoods! These thugs need to know we ARE NOT going to put with their crap. When we stand together in numbers we can have victory. And we don't have to use violence.

Helen, I don't consider age 46 "the elderely".

These animals don't think like normal human beings so suggesting that they get a job is nonsense. I think that be need to do like they do in some countries and cut off their hands. The US penal system is too soft.

Good GRIEF! I didn't realize that I was now in the "elderly" age group, helen j...and I'm two years older than the 46-year old woman in the story!!!!!

I'm just glad none of this is happening in my neighborhood. I guess mid town and dundee area are more ghetto then my North Omaha area. Thank you criminals and stay away from the Northside. Was Juan Castenada in jail yesterday, probably some of his accomplices? MS 13 DIE!

there shouldn't be mugging and they shouldn't go after the elderly

Posted by: W on Nov 19, 2008 at 09:09 AM
We need street cameras to help catch these thugs today. The thug mentality is spreading like the cancer it is.

Posted by: Zack on Nov 19, 2008 at 08:28 AM
As a neighborhood, we need to stand up and say "Not here!" We can blame this on the OPD all we want, but they are spread too thin. Come together as a community and look out for your neighbor. Get to know people on your block so you recognize when someone doesn't belong. We have to come together as a neighborhood if we are going to end this recent crime wave in Dundee. To those that think the only answer is to own a gun, there are other ways. Plus, how many people truly know how to fire a gun, I don't want to get a stray bullet in my window!

Yikes... I'm glad she's ok. With all the crazies shooting people lately, it could've been a lot worse. Shame on all these robberse though... go get a job! The rest of us work darn hard for our money..
